Fresh, Healthy, Smart Hair Tips!

It all starts with the hair. Everyone knows that a new haircut, new hairstyle, or new hair color always makes one feel more vibrant and confident. Instead of changing anything, just make your hair healthier and be confident with the natural beauty of your flowing locks!
For Thin Hair: Drop heavy conditioners and use a product with silicone (dimethicone or cyclomethlcone). This will make lifeless hair come to life, without looking greasy!

Food for Thought: As our previous article described, you are what you eat! Make sure your diet consists of fish and nuts for healthy hair. Your scalp will become healthier with protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Green vegetables also carry tons of vitamins to boost hair health. Beware of certain diets that remove nutrients from your meals, which may cause you to be deficient in numerous nutrients such as: zinc, biotin, and protein.

Water and Shine: You hair has a natural conditioner called sebum. However, hot water can take some of this conditioner away. When washing your hair, try using lukewarm water.

For Split Ends: Too much work on your hair can cause damage. Luckily, there’s a solution for split ends! Try to find a conditioner that contains protein. This will repair split ends, only if you use it regularly.
For the Bounce: Use a leave-in conditioner or mousse to add more bounce to your hair. Dry the root area first and use a low-heat setting for any styling if you have fine hair.

For Dandruff: The cause for this is not because of a dry scalp, but rather an inflammation that affects the scalp. Don’t use oils to fix it; it will only make it worse. Be sure to use a medicated shampoo, like Head and Shoulders.

For Hair Loss: Don’t brush as much! Too much brushing can increase hair loss. It’s normal to lose 50-100 hairs a day. To minimize any more, avoid brushing your hair while its wet and use a brush with ball-tipped bristles.
Damaging Styles: Avoid doing much with your hair while its wet, which is when it’s most fragile. Don’t put your hair in a ponytail or braids while it is still wet. Also, be weary about tight ponytails, tight braids, or extensions (recommended to keep in for 3 months max.).

Saving Money on Hair: More expensive shampoo and conditioners don’t mean better results. The most important thing is picking a shampoo and conditioner that is designed for your hair; whether that be oily or color-treated.

For Curly Hair: Use a pick verses a comb or a brush, because curly hair is more likely to break. Look for conditioners that contain polymers to keep your hair more manageable. As always, avoid straightening your hair as much to reduce damage.
For Hair Color: Dermatologists recommend to not go past 3 shades of your natural hair color to avoid damage. A larger difference risks damage.

About Hair Dye: Besides damaging your hair if use too much, hair dye doesn’t not have any bad effects on your health.

On Blow Drying: Heat tends to damage hair, so take a rest on blow dryer and let your hair dry naturally. Use a conditioner before styling for added protection.

Hair in the Sun: Sun doesn’t only affect your skin. Sun exposure can dry out your hair. Try wearing a hat while in the sun for long periods of time, or using a hair spray that includes SPF to keep your hair looking healthy.
Hair in Chlorine: Those showers are at the pool for a reason! Get your hair wet before taking a swim in the pool. If you hair is already wet, it won’t absorb as much chlorine as dry hair would. You can also try a pH-balancing hair product as well.

The Best Tip? Do nothing. Letting your hair just be, is the best tip of all. Besides, sometimes the un-done, natural look is the most beautiful.

Make sure you take notice to your hair. If there are any specific and noticeable changes, that could mean a health problem. If you notice anything different, consult a dermatologist.

Create! Destroy! Conquer! An Artistic Entrepreneurship Story

LAE Beauty was created by two entrepreneurs Kelley and Lauren Anderson. Therefore, for this week’s blog post we’d like to show a case study of a pair of entrepreneurs starting their business in Tampa, Florida, the area of LAE’s next stop in their Fresh.Healthy.Smart lifestyle.
Creative Destruction Clothing is a clothing and shoe line that was started in Tampa, Florida, by two entrepreneurs: Daniel Fernandez and Cameron Barbas. The two 23-year-old men have collaborated with many prominent tattoo artists to create a line that showcases artistic expression that usually bears in tattoos.
The shoes in their line have been trademarked with the name Tats. CDC also produces hats and apparel for men and women. This product line opens up opportunity for tattoo artists around the country to showcase their artwork on a canvas that is being sold nationally.

The company began its marks two years ago between local tattoo artists and the creator/founder, Daniel Fernandez. “As a graduated photography major I am truly passionate about art, style, and color. For years this is the reason for all of my tattoos. People go out and think its cool to have tattoos, which it is (he says through a smile), but people miss the artistic value of what most of these artists possess. This is an opportunity to work together with people who have the same drive and beliefs I have and it still gives me goose bumps to think of where we’ve come as a company and the potential we have to reach,” says Daniel Fernandez.
The first thirteen designs of Tats came from two Tampa local tattoo shops, Ink Fink and Las Vegas Tattoo. Mucca, of Ink Fink, designed the first two pairs of Tats. Mucca airbrushed with a style of tattoo art, called sugar skulls. “I love that CDC opens the door for me to get my style of art out there,” says Mucca.

A few of the other current designers for Tats come from Ybor City’s Las Vegas Tattoo. Steven “Fish” Warner, Jon Clark and Michael Hall all bring in their own sense of style to the CDC brand.
“The difference between designing shoes and tattooing is that CDC allows me so much more freedom. There is no specific avenue with these guys; they just want me to draw…the shoes allow us to go beyond the tattoo enthusiasts and into a realm where people normally wouldn’t look at our artwork because of the negative stereotype some people have of tattoos and the artists,” says Steven “Fish” Warner, tattoo artist.
From airbrushing, to markers, to pencils, the designs behind Creative Destruction Clothing come from all angles. All the shoes are said to “come to life” in their designs. A unique sense of fashion for a range of age groups has emerged with this company. Fan favorites for the 35+ age group appear to be the By the Bay and Gone Fishin’.
This company, based on artistic expression, “gives credit where credit is due”. Not only are the artists paid for their work, but they are also paid commission when the designs they produced sell on the products. Once paid for the design, it is shipped to a manufacturer. The design is then reproduced on a canvas that then molds into a shoe. Finally, the design is covered with a protective mold to protect the artwork.
The doors truly opened for these two entrepreneurs at their first trade show in Tampa, Florida. According to Cameron Barbas, “Artists were approaching us from all over the state and other parts of the country asking how they can be a part of the team and design a pair of Tats, Without hesitation Dan and I told them the process, gave them a pair of blank shoes and the rest is history."
There are now artists working on designs from all over, including: Tampa, Tallahassee, New Port Richey, Detroit, St. Louis, Chicago, California and Indiana. The CDC storefront will be opening next month at 500 S. Howard Avenue in Tampa, Florida. The store will include clothing, shoes, hats, and even girl’s bottoms.
Through hard work and determination, Daniel Fernandez and Cameron Barbas have created an inspiring company in the heart of a rough economy. Their products showcase unique styles and creative fashion sense. For those that support tattoos, and those who support the intricate designs behind them, these products are just the things to sport. The two uphold their motto: Create! Destroy! Conquer!
Cameron Barbas, one of the owners of CDC, says he will even visit LAE Beauty Inc., once we make our way to Tampa, Florida.

This story just goes to show, that anything is truly possible. From opening a tanning salon and nurturing it to becoming a prominent and up scale Medi-spa that is becoming ready to brand nationally, to creating a clothing line based around artwork from the talented community, opportunities are what you make them.
"The only thing that comes to a sleeping man is dreams,” so wake up and go out there to make your own dreams come true. From one entrepreneurship story to another, good luck!

Lean By Design: The Fresh. Healthy. Smart way to Weight Loss!

Struggling with weight loss? Beth Dalton, owner and founder of Lean By Design in Gainesville, Florida, has the perfect plan for you to implement. Her mission for her business is “empowering others to live their dreams of healthy living.”

First thing’s first. You have to visualize your goals for success in order to achieve them. Beth tells us that you are six times more likely to achieve your goals if you list them on paper. Next comes the right attitude. You have to be prepared for a lifestyle change when it comes to healthier eating, so make sure you prepare with the right attitude because 80% of weight loss begins with proper balanced nutrition. Keep hydrated, eat your breakfast, and start a cardio routine that reaches your target heart rate so that you can keep burning calories even after you workout.
There are some dangers when it comes to weight-loss. Dalton tells us to stay away from the following foods: fried transfatty foods, high sugared fruits (in excess), low-fiber starches (white bread/crackers), too much protein in one meal, and high fructose corn syrup. Dalton also suggests avoiding alcohol and caffeine as much as possible because they dehydrate the body and prevent the metabolism from being as strong as possible. Also, let yourself take that afternoon nap or sleep in on that Sunday afternoon. Sleep is important for your body to regenerate, adults need at least 7-8 hours.
Dalton belives that a lot of problems with obesity have to do with confusion and ridiculous diets like: the cookie diet, the peanut butter diet, the 500 calories/day diet, etc. Even though you may lose weight on some of these methods, beware that it will not be in a healthy or long term way.

Dalton’s program is divided into four sections, L.E.A.N. The first, L: Learning the Basics about the Body with Love.
First and foremost, understand what a “calorie” is…it is energy.  The foods we eat have chemical compounds that break down and give the body energy. Weight loss occurs when you balance the energy in from our foods verses energy out through movement. You must remember that 3,500 calories is equal to 1 lb of fat. Make sure you are aware of your appropriate daily caloric intake (per your body only). Official health guidelines provide that all the weight you should lose in a week is one to two pounds, which is 3500-7000 calories. Any weight over 2 lbs could be muscle mass loss and muscle is needed to burn fat and preserve the frame of our bodies.
Dalton offers us a metaphor for viewing calories: “We all understand and appreciate the value of a hard-earned dollar. Think of calories like money. You have a certain amount of calories you can ‘spend’ each day in order to reach your goal weight, so you want to spend very wisely, or you will bankrupt your brain and body."
The second part of Dalton’s method, is E: Exercise and Environment. There are a variety of reasons why exercise is important for weight-loss. In order to burn fat safely and effectively you have to reach your target heart rate to reach a process Dalton lists as E.P.O.C (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) which allows your metabolism to burn fat hours after working out.
Your target heart rate is determined by: age, height, weight, resting heart rate, etc. Dalton suggests purchasing a heart rate monitor so you can personally track if you are working out too hard or too little. If you don’t go for the heart rate monitor then utilize the heart rate monitor on most cardio machines, but don’t forget to program them with most of these main basic settings (listed above).
On average, the ideal exercise level for weight-loss, in the beginning, is burning 300-500 calories a day (3-5 times a week) especially for those who are severely overweight and/or obese.
Lastly, consider your environment. “Our lives are made up of energy (both negative and positive). Too much ‘stuff’ blocks the flow of energy in our surroundings. A clear energy field around you enables you to focus on every area of your life without being overly distracted or confused".

Dalton’s third level of her LEAN program is A: Attitude and Affirmations. She describes the 3 A’s one needs to nourish their mind with for optimal weight-loss: the right attitude, the right affirmations, and bringing the mind into alignment with your ultimate goal. You have to understand that your mind controls the body. Meditations are also encouraged by Dalton because it is an opportunity to connect with your higher self, think of it as your spiritual "food".
Affirmations are very important in her process. “Thoughts create words, which create action and/or events within our lives to unfold. Beginning each affirmation with ‘I am’ is planting (in your mind) the possibility of success and nothing but success. Affirmations are like ‘Miracle Grow’ for the mind,” Dalton says.
Dalton’s fourth and final level of her program is N: Nutrition and the Importance of Now! Protein is a key part in optimizing health and weight loss. After the age of 30, one loses approximately 5% of muscle and bone mass every decade (according to the world-renowned protein expert, Dr. Donald K. Layman…whose research she uses in her program).
The best and first step to optimal nutrition is breakfast; so don’t think about skipping it! Also, don’t consider a bowl of cereal or a sugar-filled yogurt an appropriate breakfast. According to Dalton, “A balances breakfast will make or break your day."
The reason for breakfast being so important is so that your body can begin a process called protein synthesis. Dalton describes this as the process that builds new proteins. She offers a number sequence for individuals seeking weight loss: 30/200/30/200/30. This sequence involves having at least 30 grams of protein coupled with high-quality carbs (which include fruits and vegetables) three times a day. Also, it is wise to have a 200-calories (or less) snack in between these meals to support a healthy and strong metabolism.
Dalton warns not to consume more than 50 grams of protein in a single meal because your body will be unable to process it and it could just lead to fat storage. One of the nutritionists she follows, Dr. Layman, recommends between 1,400 to 1,700 calories/day for healthy weight loss.
Hydration is also important to nutrition. Your body is 60% water and your brain is 80%. Many times when you feel as if you are hungry, you’re really just dehydrated because the hunger and thirst centers sit next to each other in the brain. The general rule of thumb that Dalton describes is to drink half of your body weight in ounces.
When it comes to healthy foods for the brain, Dalton also follows the research of Dr. Daniel Amen (a world-renowned brain specialist and neuroscientist).  Some of these suggested brain healthy foods are the following: apples, blueberries, cherries, dark chocolate, garlic, grapefruit, green tea, lemons, nutmeg, olive oil, oranges, raspberries, red grapes, soy beans, strawberries, tomatoes, tuna and turmeric.
*Key fact: Turmeric, found in curry, contains a chemical that has been shown to decrease the plaques in the brain thought to lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

Coming from someone who had her own struggle with weight-loss and discovered a way through it, try out the Lean by Design way! Why hinder yourself from being proud of your body? Get L.E.A.N today, and live in a body that you love, trust, and admire!

Beth Dalton is a personal trainer and healthy lifestyle coach, certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She is not a nutritionist, but studies the work of credible, award-winning nutritionists: Dr. Layman and Dr. Amen. She also recommends James Allen’s “As A Man Thinketh” for astounding “food for thought”.

Smile Brigher, Feel Happier: The Secrets to a Whiter Smile

As always, consider what you put into your mouth before you do it. Dark foods sit on your teeth the longest and have the ability to seep through your enamel causing staining. The main foods to be wary about are: coffee, red wine, tobacco, and tea. If you drink any of these, simply wash your teeth afterwards to prevent it from soaking through your enamel.

Another way for a simple, whiter smile is teeth whitening or teeth bleaching. Teeth whitening brings your teeth back to its natural color, removing a degree of stains and debris. Teeth bleaching, which is more expensive and leads to higher teeth sensitivity, breaks into the molecules in the tooth to penetrate the stain and has longer results.
At LAE Beauty we offer you an effective and low-cost teeth-whitening solution. You can purchase two 20-minute back-to-back sessions that produce teeth 3-5 shades lighter. This entire procedure is only $99! After this, or another treatment, it is recommended to avoid using abrasive toothpastes or mouthwashes, sodas and fruit juices with high acidity for about two weeks.
There are certain foods that help keep your teeth white, too. Eating raw fruits and veggies helps create saliva that cleans your teeth. Swish water around your mouth for 30 seconds after each meal and try professional teeth-whitening gums as well (but make sure they are sugarless).

Your local grocery store also has many at-home remedies to try. You can try anywhere from teeth whitening kits, strips, or teeth whitening toothpastes. The old-fashioned teeth whitening trick that uses baking soda and a toothbrush is still a promising element in teeth whitening.

Electric toothbrushes may do a better job at removing teeth stains rather than traditional toothbrushes. The key to maintaining a white smile is brushing your teeth and flossing daily. The minimum is brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once. However for healthier and brighter results, brush after every meal and snack to avoid staining your teeth.

Your yearly dentist check-ups also lead to whiter teeth. The professional cleaning methods dentists use brighten up your smile using polishes and abrasion.

Other things to avoid
If you have had lots of dental work, be careful with teeth whitening. Unnatural teeth will stand out among naturally whitened teeth. Also, avoid whitening your teeth too much (more than once a year, depending on the method) it could lead your teeth to become more translucent and wearing away enamel.
One of the biggest no-no’s told by professionals is smoking. Tobacco stains teeth more than other products and penetrates teeth the furthest, making it harder to whiten. Smoking also could lead to gum disease (gingivitis), bad breath, and a higher chance of oral cancer.
Sports drinks and lemonades can also erode tooth enamel. To avoid this from happening, don’t sip on these drinks for too long and rinse out your mouth with water afterwards.

Don’t be afraid to smile, and don’t be afraid to be beautiful.
